The pick and roll is a two-man action where an offensive player sets a screen (pick) for the ball handler, then moves toward the basket (rolls) after the screen. It forces a defensive decision — guard the ball handler or the roller — creating an open advantage for the offense.
In a pick-and-roll, the screener rolls to the basket after setting the screen. In a pick-and-pop, the screener steps away from the basket to a shooting spot. Pop is used when the screener is a shooting threat; roll is used when the screener is an athletic finisher.
Common PnR defenses include: hedge/show (ball handler defender goes over, big steps up), drop coverage (big stays near the paint), switching (defenders trade assignments), ICE (forcing the ball toward the sideline), and blitz (two defenders trap the ball handler).
